Cher & Marc

Cher (69) isn't the best example of  a woman who's aging in 'a natural way '. Also the summerheat has yet to come here in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, I already want to show you these beautiful pictures of Cher for Marc Jacobs' F/W 2015-campaign.

Marc Jacobs previously worked with older models. He worked for example with Jessica Lange (66).

Admit that the pictures look great. Which brand will follow (with a fantastic Sarah)?

B-day!

Yeah! Today is my birthday. Forty-seven I became. In previous years I could whine about my increasing age (and the fact you it shows more and more), but this year it's very different.

Last week I received the terrible news that the dear wife of a friend is incurable ill. Her terrible disease develops quickly, but she's so brave. It's probably a cliché, but it's my birthday and I'm just glad I became one year older again .

How bad is that aging is actually? Okay, nowadays it all looks not so fresh and fruity as when I was twenty. But honestly, at that time I couldn't estimate its value. Sometimes I look at pictures from that era look and I see the smooth skin, long hair and how pretty I looked then. Now I realize, that at that time I didn't enjoy that youthful beauty. I was just super critical about myself and just saw the things that were not as perfect as I wanted them to be. That could then determine the image about myself (in a negative way). How sad is that, in hindsight ...

Now I'm 47. Sara(h) is waiting, but today I find that totally okay. Fortunately I'm healthy. I found myself feeling comfortable in my (sagging) skin, especially since I can enjoy the beautiful things in my life. I can do the things I like, have the best partner in the world, the dearest friends that can be found and the cutest dogs and cat. Of course there are things that are not perfect, certainly, but perhaps ageing means that you learn to see the value of things and less look at what isn't.

So, dear Sara ... bring it on. I can handle you.

Cocktail Time

Blueberries are fruits that make you happy. They are very tasty in your yogurt, muffin, smoothie or just natural, but they also work well against the aging process of your skin. They're full with antioxidants.

Therefore the weekend starts really well with blueberries .... in a cocktail.

1/4 cup vodka
1 tablespoon Cointreau
1/2 teaspoon Blue Curacao
3 to 6 fresh blueberries

Combine vodka, Cointreau, and Curaçao over ice in a shaker. Strain into a martini glass. Drop in blueberries, and serve.

Dating

Fridaynight I was out with a friend. This friend is more than ten years younger than me (in the second half of her thirty's). After a long relationship she is now single again. We had fun and we also had some drinks. My friend told me about her adventures as a fresh single on the datingmarket. Especially her stories about her adventures with her Tinder-dates were hilarious.

Suddenly she said, "Well, I'm glad that I've become single now, and not ten years later. At that time I'll be old, I'll have wrinkles and my body will be sagging and I'll never find a husband..." I looked at her and asked her: "You mean, at that time you would be like me right now?" My friend was shocked and changed color when she realized what she had said. We both had to laugh really hard.

Ofcourse it was very funny. Yet it is indicative for the judgments we have about aging women. Meanwhile, the men of my age are also not getting any younger and not every man is aging charming as George Clooney. Yet men are not judged negatively on their aging appearance as women. We can not blame the men, as long as we don't embrace our aging appearance by ourselves.

Maybe we should start to accept that there is beauty in all ages. It will definitely help when all those beautiful 47+-women are more visible in the media. We need our rolemodels. I'm sure then the image of  'old = gray = unattractive' will disappear by itself. First among the women themselves.

What is your opinion?

Retinol

                                                                    Nederlands  Portugês

Carrots are good for your eyes. We already knew that. This is because your body can convert beta-carotene from carrots  into vitamin A.

But did you know that the same vitamin A also works well against the aging of your skin?

Many skin care products contain retinol and that's just another name for vitamin A. Vitamin A helps to prevent the sagging of your skin and create new cells. Of course it's better to help your skin from the inside, by good nutrition. then to put a cream on your skin.

If you're not too fond of carrots, then you can also eat cauliflower.    But also dairy, meat, egg yolks and particularly liver contains a lot of vitamin A.

Model

This campagn, with the beautiful Daphne Selfe (86), ran in April. This campagn is the result of an interesting collaboration between Vans and & Other Stories.

How often do we see older models in this type of campaign? Not enough, to my opinion. And that is strange. Especially, if you realize that the group of 45+ is very big and can be a very interesting targetgroup for brands. You should think that brands would like to attrack and inspire this group of women. Where are the models who can inspire us? And I mean no models who are just 20, but women like you and me. There are enough  50+ women  that look great. Look  at Daphne Selfe. Eighty-six, wonderful and inspiring. Yes, it is possible.

What other brand dares to pick up this challenge? But remember, do not retouch the models afterward in such a way that they look like twenty... again.

Natural

In the Netherlands we're allready used to it: an ambassador for the cosmetic surgery. Marijke Helwegen performs this role for years in her own charming and unique way. But now there is an international ambassador for the aesthetic treatments: Sharon Stone.

Sharon Stone heads  the launch of Galderma's campaign to demonstrate natural looking-results of aesthetic treatments in real life. This makes her the first celebrity to endorse an aesthetic brand to increase openness and understanding of aesthetic treatments and (as Galderma claims) the natural-looking results they can create.

That last claim (about the natural look) is the point at which Marijke Helwegen and Sharon Stone differ. Marijke Helwegen always looks great, but it is impossible to say that the result of her treatments is natural. And I don't think she really aspires it too. She likes that is all 'over the top'.

Still, I'm curious about the natural results that Sharon claims. In the media I regularly see something else. Like the beautiful Catherine Zita-Jones. At the last Golden Globes gala, she appeared to be a little too enthusiastic with the botox. Renee Zellweger is another famous example. Renee is almost unrecognizable after her cosmetic surgery. The result led to a storm of reactions in the media. Zellweger denied that she had a treatment. She declared that her metamorphosis is the result of a healthier and happier lifestyle.

How do you know  you'll  stop in time and don't become a caricature of yourself? If it is well done, it won't be noticed by others and you will look very fresh en good for your age. But if a 60 years old woman looks like 30, you know this isn't all natural. Madonna (56) looks fantastic... and also like a woman in her 30's. I think she's is fantastic. Her appearance is her trademark. She knows that she has to look spectaculair for her shows and in the media. It is a part of her job to look at her best. But what about the 'average' woman? How far will you go?

Last year I was with an acquaintance at a plastic surgeon. She wanted fillers in her lips. It turned out that she did this allready a couple of years before. The docter refused to do it again. According to him, there was plenty left from the last treatment. However, the acquaintance kept insisting on extra fillers. The doctor remarked: "Your lips are between your ears", while he winked at me. My acquintaince didn't quit asking for the extra fillers, so he gave up. He filled the lips. The same happened when she asked him for fillers for the lines between the nose and mouth. First the doctor refused, but I think you know already how this ended. I hope this acquintance will not recognize herself in this topic (oooops, sorry!) but the result was not natural at all. I know she was really happy with the result, but to be honest I think the part between the nose and the upperlip is filled like a kind of 'shelter' above her chin. (oooops, sorry again). Ofcourse the most import is that she's happy with the result. But it brought up a lot of questions.

I often see that people didn't stop in time. It seems to me that if a wrinkle is removed, a new problem is found. So you're never done. And how do you know in advance the result of the treatment will be natural? If the treatment is done you can't go back. And how do you know you have a good doctor who used the right stuff so you get no scary side effects?

As you can see, there are plenty of questions. With this blog I hope to find the answers, because it is very interesting.
